Old memories

I am a twenty five year old woman but whenever I find time, I visit a popular toys shop in Dehradun . Dehradun is very close to my town and having a developed city so near to me has always been a great thing. The city is a 30 minute drive from my town and whenever I need a change of air or am feeling blue, I just head over to Dehradun and hang out at Hamleys toy store in Pacific Mall. I find the toy store very warming as it reminds me of my childhood. My late grandfather would take me to a toys shop and a gift shop in Dehradun on the weekends and would encourage me to pick a small toy or an accessory of my choice. I look back at these memories with great love. To relive the memories, I visit the Hamleys toy store and the Archies gift store in Pacific Mall, Dehradun . Sometimes, my brother tags along and I encourage him to pick a small toy or an accessory just like how my grandfather did with me. Lately, my brother has been accompanying me on these trips more frequently. I think he h

The New Mall and My Cousins

Ever since the new mall -  Pacific Mall  - has opened in NSP Pitampura, the life of the residents of the area has become more convenient. Before, shoppers would need to travel to interior markets or to other shopping malls afar to take care of their shopping needs and wants but now, they have a shopping centre right next to them. Now, the shoppers have access to the best of apparel, footwear, accessories, lifestyle and electronics brand outlets, all under one roof, just beside them! There is no doubt about the fact that Pacific Mall will soon be labelled as the  best shopping mall in NSP  by the shoppers and other mall visitors. My extended family resides in NSP Pitampura and has not stopped mentioning the mall on our weekly calls. My cousin is a fashion icon in her college and would have to travel to a mall in West Delhi for her seasonal shopping sprees but now, she just drives down to the mall, which takes her hardly 10 minutes, and is back home with a car full of shopping bags fr

My extended family’s new obsession

My cousins are extremely happy as a great shopping mall has just been launched in their area of residence. Over the years, I have heard them whine and complain about the long commute to a mall that they would visit occasionally, which is a bit far from their area NSP Pitampura. Though that mall is not that far but the traffic would turn the half an hour commute into a one and a half hour commute, which has proven to be a huge buzzkill for the shoppers. But now, Pacific Group, the corporation behind the Pacific Malls in Delhi NCR and Dehradun, has established a new Pacific shopping mall in NSP Pitampura, at the Netaji Subhash Place metro station. This new mall has been a great news for the residents of Pitampura. Ever since the launch of the mall, shoppers and diners have been making frequent trips to the shopping centre, enjoying the short commute and shopping at all the brands that the mall has to offer to the visitors. But my aunt just informed me that ever since the launch of th

My niece, family and amusement

When my little niece was sent away to boarding school in Dehradun, there was an uproar in my family. All the elders were furious and the children were scared. No one seemed to support the idea and everyone started calling up my brother and sister-in-law to give them a piece of their mind. At that time, no one could understand the logic behind this rough decision and the family kept making illogical plans to bring her back home. It took over three months for my brother and his wife to warm everyone to the decision. They wanted to provide a good education to my niece, which was not possible in their hometown due to a lack of good schools in the district. While most of the family stopped making further plans to bring her back home, some kept enquiring about the toys shop in Dehradun so that they could get some toys delivered to her hostel dorm. Her grandfather even took a step further and announced that he would buy a gift shop in Dehradun to be able to send gifts to the little girl o

College, Malls and Dreams

I lived in Dwarka, New Delhi for 3 years, from 2013 to 2016, for my college education. I rented a bed in a paying guest accommodation in Dwarka Sector 13 and would travel to Dwarka Sector 9 six days a week. This was my first time living away from home and it took me a while to get used to the independent lifestyle. Things became better when I made a few good friends in college and formed a good social circle. After the college classes, some of us would want to hang out and to find a decent place, we would visit all the malls around looking for a dining establishment where we could sit and relax for hours on end. My friends and I must have visited over 4 malls in a week but found none of them to be operational. We did spot a few food joints but the rush of customers would force us to leave the establishments after our meals. We wished and hoped that someone would build a fully-operational Mall in Dwarka for us but it just did not happen in the three years of our college lives. My f

Delhi: Winters & Shopping

I had heard a lot about Delhi from some work colleagues but never really thought I would live in the city. Having been brought up in Mumbai, my whole life was scheduled to be spent in the city but an interesting work opportunity made me reconsider my decisions and encouraged me to explore the capital of the country. I landed in Delhi last month and found a perfect flat that I could call home in Rajouri Garden, West Delhi. It was very near to my office and had a market within walking distance. All major necessities were at an arm’s length here. I loved it! Last week, after taking three long weeks to settle in, I had a weekend to myself for the first time. I knew I would have to build a winter wardrobe here and had already brought some light woollen clothes from Mumbai but I had underestimated the harshness of Delhi winters by a huge margin. A colleague suggested me to visit Pacific Mall , Tagore Garden, which I found to be at a 3 km distance from my new home. So, I dedicated my Satu

An Attractive Destination

Dehradun used to be an institutional area in the late 90’s but by the early 2000s, the city started developing its residential, commercial and recreational sectors to appeal to migrating families, school and college-going youth and salaried employees. Real estate agents and private builders stepped in to take over the residential sector, corporations stepped in to develop the commercial sector and entrepreneurs stepped in to establish recreational zones in and near the commercial and residential sectors. The entrepreneurs invested in restaurants, movie theatres, cafes, bars and game zones to take advantage of the rapidly increasing young crowd in the city. As more and more institutional groups set up colleges in the city, restaurants and movie theatres started observing a rush of crowds. There were already many restaurants in Dehradun in the late 90’s but the establishments catered to the well-off families who would dine at the restaurant every once in a while. But in the early 20
